Departures

This show is going on 10 years now, but who cares. Just finished Season 1 and started Season 2. Binge-worthy. Streaming now on Netflix. Makes you want to get out and see the world.

King Of Laughter

Jerry Lewis died today, at 91. I'm gonna go cry now. Here's a one of my favorites scenes from, "You're Never Too Young." Thanks for all your pioneer work that transformed the film industry, Jerry.

Remembering Shakespeare

Image
401 years ago, the greatest writer of all time died. It goes without saying how marvelously his work thrives still today. Here's a list of 10 movies that you didn't know were based (or loosely based) on his work. So like him or not, you've seen Shakespeare (more or less). Who remembers #7, at the 3:50 mark? Number 4 is one of my favorites. I think it's only fitting as we recognize the longevity of this incredible writer that we take a few minutes to consider what's changed over the years, particularly regarding the speech, the accents and language of Shakespeare's time. Lastly, as thou hast tarrie'd so long, let us relish here the high exposition a duet, a ditty, a rolicking song  of  "Who Doth Inhabit The Primary Position," (as played in the original Elizabethan):

Elements of Suspense

Image
In this Open Culture post, "Lessons From The Screenplay" creator Michael Tucker explores "the nature and tensions of suspense." Click through to: How Quentin Tarantino Creates Suspense in His Favorite Scene, the Tension-Filled Opening Moments of Inglourious Basterds.  (spoiler alert) It doesn't matter if you like Tarantino or not--the truth remains that we are captivated by suspense. Spend the next 15 minutes in this "master class" to better understand the mechanism behind those spell-binding, nail-biting scenes that keep us coming back for more.  Genius. Pure genius.

Today I Am Watching . . .

My weight. Keeping it out there where I can see it. That's not true. I'm trying to get it out of sight. Tired of looking at it. Netflix later. Or Hulu. (**gasp** Did you know that "Space 1999" is on Hulu? 😁) Or YouTube. (Like old CrossFit Games footage. Yeah . . . ) You know that break in the show where they insert commercials? When you binge-watch on one of the streaming services, there are no commercials (which can be bad if you're watching your weight because now you can't do quick exercises in the break--or go to the bathroom--but we won't go there. No pun intended) so we take advantage of those few seconds to shout out "Buy Folgers!" then get right back to it. Ain't got time for commercials. But if you still enjoy commercials, here are some couch workouts while you watch TV . Oh, and this video, below? It's true. I've lived it. Well, most of it. The first part, anyway.

The Pixar Theory

Fascinating. Yet, there is something to be said about observing relationships . . . and imagination. But still, fascinating nonetheless.

Family Movie-night Recommendation

I was a small when I first learned about Kon-Tiki and read the book of the experiment/adventure a couple of times. This movie came out two years ago, limited release in America. When I saw it on Netflix Instant View, it was instantly added to my queue. This film hits the high points of the experiment/adventure with one graphic scene (I don't remember in the book, most likely added for the film) involving angry fishermen and one shark. Beautifully photographed, not burdensome in story but (as always) the book is always better.
