"The sin of Sodom and Gomorrah was not homosexuality"

The argument suggests that Sodom and Gomorrah was not destroyed because of homosexuality, but because of gang rape and lack of hospitality including failure to provide help to the poor and needy (Ezekiel 16:48-49). Actually, homosexuality IS the major issue of Genesis 19 and Ezekiel 16. First, consider Genesis 19:5 when the people of the city demand Lot’s visiting men in order that they may “know” them. If homosexuality was not the issue then why would Lot say, “don’t do this evil, here are my daughters” (19:7). No rape has yet occurred, but the implication is clear that 1) inhospitality is not the issue; and 2) giving the daughters seems to be a solution to the evil. Certainly gang rape is another difficulty that can be addressed, but don’t let this escape notice: Lot’s attempt to thwart the crowd from “knowing” the men inside is that they would instead “know” his daughters. Second, what exactly are the “haughty and detestable things” (abominations) being judged in Ezekie...

"The Creation Story of Genesis 2:21-25 does not condemn same-sex love"

Or is this just a story about God’s creative power only? How does Genesis 2:21-25 read? “ So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made  into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, ‘This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.’ Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed .” What Moses was inspired to write here is an expansion of what was started in the previous chapter, “ So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them .” Returning back to chapter 2, we find that Eve is declared to be man’s helper (2:18, 20, 24). Is that it? Is the woman merely the helpe...

Job's Reflection, part 1

The Old Testament book of Job is not one we may intentionally turn to unless it is the next book in our Bible reading, or we are facing some sort of deep difficulty and we flip though it looking for a measure of consolation. I am now reading through it yet again as part of my regular course of Bible reading—but this one passage has arrested my attention, and I would like to spend some time doing what Job does in this passage: reflect. I can honestly say I don’t know how many times I’ve read through the book and it never impacted me this way before—and it’s always been there. The book of Job contains many clues that indicate the man himself lived long before Moses. This may not seem important at first, but the passage holding my attention is all the more intriguing because of this fact. Moses received the Moral, Civil and Ceremonial laws of God while on Mount Sinai, long after Job lived and died. Just hang on to that thought. A quick survey so we have the passage in context (it is a...

Contend!

As a young teenager, I nearly lost my right hand. The accident could have been avoided if I had obeyed my father’s instruction, but I just had to try. Perhaps many have done the same thing I was doing that day—lighting firecrackers and tossing them. The warnings are there for a reason, and my one act of foolishness almost cost me—one fast fuse is all it takes. One can never tell one fast fuse from any other—they all look the same. You can’t plan an accident like that. I believe God spared me all but the pain when the thing went off in my hand. I’ve never felt anything so horrible and pray I never do again. The New Testament book of Jude is an amazing little letter. Many people not too familiar with the Bible may look for something short to read when they open the book for the first time and tend to gravitate toward the smaller books. Imagine the surprise when they read this little epistle! It nearly explodes in one’s hands! I believe the short book with its’ short fuse is part of th...

U-mabonga-kutuk-izizwe-zonke and The Warning to the Nations in Psalm 2

Solomon was right: there is nothing new under the sun. I am amazed at the ongoing objections concerning the relevance of the Bible today, yet within those very objections is proof enough that the Bible is indeed very relevant. Objectors do not realize how they confirm scripture by their very act of rebellion. We find ourselves in the unique position to view an incredible display of God's omniscience as He reveals what is on the hearts, minds and in the actions of His enemies. This, too, demonstrates the relevance of God's Word today as what God reveals continues without abatement today. They bring nothing new to the forum, but a tired excuse to disbelieve God. When David was inspired to ask, " why are the nations in an uproar ," he was reflecting on old news and from our perspective, nothing has changed in that regard: the nations are still in an uproar as they try to cast off the rule of God. What should the nations be doing? The book of Psalms alone contains a small...

La Vie Boheme?

I watched two movies that have nothing to do with each other; yet, they both tell the same story. I refer to “Rent” and “The Lion in Winter.” Both were first-time viewings for me. I n case you are wondering where I’ve been, I am not one to rush out and see movies during their hype. I like to let the dust settle so I may digest the event without distraction from the hoopla. Both movies were remakes of their original. “Rent” (2005) is a direct translation of Puccini’s 1896 opera, “La Boheme.” The story is of the cold, of love and hate, of life and death through the eyes of starving artists in the ghetto. “The Lion in Winter” (2003), starring Patrick Steward and Glenn Close, was a bold remake of the 1968 Hepburn/O’Tool film, which tells the story of King Henry II, of cold, of love and hate, of life and death through the eyes of regal villains scratching for the throne during the 1180’s Britain. This story has been told and retold by Shakespeare (“King John” and subsequent “King Henry” pla...

God’s Perspective on Sexual Immorality

[This entry is a summary of notes complied from a Bible study as presented in Mack, Wayne (1979). A Homework Manual for Biblical Counseling, Vol. 1: Personal and Interpersonal Problems. Phillipsburg, NJ: Presbyterian and Reformed PublishingCo., 1981. “Sex Problems,” pp. 164-165. Why? Because sometimes this stuff just needs to be said.] God is not ambiguous and says very plainly that sexual immorality is an abomination (Lev. 18:22) and is a judgment of God for one who exchanges and suppresses the truth of God for a lie (Ro. 1:24-32). God has made it very clear that those who are sexually immoral will not inherit the kingdom of God (1 Cor. 6:9-11). Sexual immorality is contrary to, disobedient to the sound teaching of the gospel of God (1 Tim. 1:8-11). The source of lust is an impure heart (2 Tim 2:22) and to engage in lustful and imaginary acts is to do the act itself (Mt. 5:27-32). Gross immorality and pursuing strange flesh deserves the harshest punishment (Lev. 20:13). Gross immoral...

Homosexuality

“Coincident with the rise of the gay rights movement in recent years has been an increasing focus on the biblical statements regarding homosexuality or sodomy. As part of this focus, the meaning of the term rsenokotai (arsenokoitai, "homosexuals"), used twice by the apostle Paul (1 Cor 6:9; 1 Tim 1:10), has received vigorous scrutiny.” (DeYoung, James. “ The Source and NT Meaning of ἀρσενοκοίτη [arsenokoitai], with Implications for Christian Ethics and Ministry .”) “American is entangled in the most heated battle of the culture wars to date. Many consider it a Waterloo. State supreme courts and city governments, senators and congressmen, community leaders, celebrities, and even clergy all have mounted a powerful offensive in support of gay "marriage." What follows is a point-by-point reply to those who are demanding this revision of civilization.” (Koukl, Greg. “ Same-sex Marriage Challenges and Responses .”) “For the past fifteen years, homosexual activists h...

Calls to "repent" disrupts gay bishop's "sermon.'

Openly gay US bishop Gene Robinson was forced to halt a sermon at a west London church after being heckled. As Bishop Robinson began his sermon a member of the congregation repeatedly called him a "heretic" and said "repent, repent, repent". He began his sermon by saying how sad it was that the Anglican Communion was tearing itself apart. But he was stopped when the man in the congregation shouted that the schism was the bishop's fault. The man's protest was followed by slow hand-clapping by members of the congregation, and Bishop Robinson halted his sermon while a hymn was sung and the protester was escorted from the church in Putney, south west London . . . . Watch the video here . The original article is here . ************ Other comments by the bishop: "When someone stands up and says homosexuality is an abomination, does that make you want to get to know God?" My response: If God says homosexuality is an abomination, why would you continu...

What To Hold On To?

In a country village of Pennsylvania a physician gave books on infidelity [immorality, pornography] to a young man and persuaded him to deny the Lord Jesus Christ. When the young man was fifty years old, he lay dying and was attended by the same physician, the infidel teacher. As the end was approaching, the doctor told him to die as he lived—a rejector of the great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. “Hold on to the end,” the doctor urged. “Yes, doctor,” said the dying man, “there is just my trouble—you gave me nothing to hold on to.” The doctor could not answer.
