You know what they say . . .  "Try anything once. Do the fun stuff twice." This little quote has been the key that has opened many a door to me to a variety of experiences, many of them extraordinary. I think I came across it about a hundred years ago when a Japanese family opened their home and shared their culture with me through costume, music, food and fun. One particular experience that I am sure cemented this little phrase deep within came along with a serving of Chocolate Covered Ants. Most recently, we were out and about looking for a place to eat. Forgetting that one of our favorite Mexican restaurants was closed we took off driving, scratching names of restaurants off our impromptu list. Then we remembered one place we knew about but never tried, a little place called "Ten Ten Chinese Restaurant" that specializes in Chinese and Vietnamese dishes. Instantly my stomach said, "Try!" An aside: I've about had it with Chinese buffets. Recentl...

The Best Part Of The Day

Image
Some folks are morning folks. Others are "owls," the night-time folks. I'd like to think I'm a morning person because the evening comes on real fast for me nowadays. If I make it past 10:30 p.m., something's wrong. Know what I mean? Don't get me wrong--I don't exactly bounce out of bed first thing, but the morning seems to be the best part of the day for me. If you don't know who the Burrito Lady is (we dubbed her "Mother Chorizo") then you ain't lived. Every day these local vendors would stop by the store selling fresh, hot...

Favorite Food

A friend recently posted a picture of a doughnut in a bowl of cereal. The caption read, “the bigger the Cheerio, the better it tastes.” This same friend also posted a picture of piece of chocolate cake. The caption read, “keep cake moist by eating it all in one sitting.” I think my friend is on to something! My cousin posted a pic that reads, “Women belong in the kitchen. Men belong on the kitchen. Everybody belongs in the kitchen. The kitchen has food.” She, too, is on to something! I’ve learned that it’s best to think of food as fuel--I just keep a full tank, I guess. There are some foods I like more than others--like chocolate. But man cannot live by chocolate alone (did I just write that? Someone feel my head). Here’s what I like: Pizza Hut Deep Dish Super Supreme Pizza Korean Food Homemade Banana Pudding Ice Cream (the darker the chocolate, the better) with Magic Shell. Must have the Magic Shell.  I think my favorite dish is one I make myself. It’s a Cabbage recipe...
