Wakefield

Image
“In some old magazine or newspaper I recollect a story, told as truth, of a man—let us call him Wakefield—who absented himself for a long time from his wife. The fact, thus abstractedly stated, is not very uncommon, nor, without a proper distinction of circumstances, to be condemned either as naughty or nonsensical. Howbeit, this, though far from the most aggravated, is perhaps the strangest instance on record of marital delinquency, and, moreover, as remarkable a freak as may be found in the whole list of human oddities. The wedded couple lived in London. The man, under pretense of going a journey, took lodgings in the next street to his own house, and there, unheard of by his wife or friends and without the shadow of a reason for such self-banishment, dwelt upward of twenty years. During that period he beheld his home every day, and frequently the forlorn Mrs. Wakefield. And after so great a gap in his matrimonial felicity—when his death was reckoned certain, his estate settled...

Book Review: Tim Ferris, The 4-hour Workweek

Image
The immediately useful parts of this book were Chapters 5 (The End of Time Management: Illusions and Italians), Chapter 6 (The Low-Information Diet: Cultivating Selective Ignorance) and Chapter 7 (Interrupting Interruption and the Art of Refusal), applicable to nearly every work environment. The first four chapters serve as an overlong introduction, whereas the remainder of the book requires long term planning and execution of the author’s thesis.

Rescue Yourself!

“…are you on offense or defense [?] I think that as you survey the challenges in your lives, it’s just: Which of those did you assign yourself, and which of those are you doing to please someone else? Your inbox is a to-do list to which anyone can add an action item. I needed to get out of my inbox and back to my own to-do list.” (Chris Sacca, Early Stage Investor) Tip: limit yourself to two “mission critical” action items per day. That’s one short to-do list!

Philosopher King

Image
“For I believe a good king is from the outset and by necessity a philosopher, and the philosopher is from the outset a kingly person.” (Musinius Rufus, Lectures, 8.33.32–34) “There are fewer kings these days, but we’re all leaders in one way or another—of families, of companies, of a team, of an audience, of a group of friends, of ourselves. It’s the study of philosophy that cultivates our reason and ethics so that we can do our job well. We can’t just wing it—too many people are counting on us to do it right.” (Ryan Holiday, Daily Stoic)

Times, They Are A-Changing

On Monday, July 11 another change is coming to my life. After losing my job of 20 years and subsequently being excused from my doctoral program (the University was footing the bill) I’ve spent the last two years working in a local hardware store, a more Pop than Mom operation an hour away from where I live. I’ve worked open to close many times, missed countless lunches, filled in for absences, managed two fleets, a staff of workers, provided customer service on all levels, even IT support and stocked shelves. I am grossly overworked and severely underpaid. But I’ve made lots of friends and have in some way, contributed to the building and beauty of the community. But it’s time to move on.   I’ve been on a constant job search and now, it’s come along. So I’ll be going into Hotel Management at a location 15 minutes from my house. And the pay is commensurate with the position. I’m actually excited about the room for growth and advancement! Hopefully I’ll be able to recover so m...

Welcome, July

“. . . Rosy Summer next advancing, Rush'd into her sire's embrace— Her bright-hair'd sire, who bade her keep For ever nearest to his smiles, On Calpe's olive-shaded steep Or India's citron-cover'd isles. More remote and buxom-brown, The Queen of vintage bow'd before his throne; A rich pomegranate gemm'd her crown, A ripe sheaf bound her zone. . . “ From “ Ode To Winter” by Thomas Campbell (July 27, 1777 - June 15, 1844)
